Roosevelt was using the poetic device known as imagery. This allows the speaker to use words to inflect an image in the listeners as to what they are talking about. Many, if not all, of us are familiar what it is like to be dusty, sweaty and bleeding so using imagery he painted a mental picture of what he wants to represent as a "good man".
