Which element provides strength to the exoskeletons of clams and oysters?

There isn't a single element, but there is a specific compound that is found in the exoskeletons of molluscs. The compound is known as Calcium Carbonate, or CaCO3. There is also a little protein in the shell, but Calcium Carbonate is the main compound.
